Synopsis

This book has been compiled with the goal of stimulating thought and debate about insurgency and counterinsurgency from a South African perspective and with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. We have sought throughout to strike a balance between academic credibility and accessibility, in the hope that a wide range of readers, including military personnel, government officials, researchers from civil society, academics and students, will find it useful. For this reason, we have kept the chapters short and, by academic standards, relatively informal. As always for a book of this kind, we have had to strike a balance between, on the one hand, the desire for detailed and in-depth research, and, on the other, the desire to produce a timely product.
